Patrick Smith, better known by his high school baseball nickname of "Wheels", assists clients in all aspects of real estate projects, including industrial projects, retail shopping centers, office buildings, condominiums, hotels, farm and ranch acquisitions and mixed use projects. Over the course of his legal career, Mr. Smith has represented owners and developers and landlords and tenants in all areas of the real estate industry, including leasing, acquisition, development, planning, construction and sales matters. In addition, he has represented mortgage lenders in various aspects of the lending industry. Mr. Smith also assists clients in obtaining necessary municipal or governmental approvals for their projects. In order to do so, he has a comprehensive understanding of municipal and county ordinances, the development process, as well as state and federal law, impacting property rights generally and, in particular, the protection of entitlements.
Mr. Smith also assists clients in the formation and management of partnerships, corporations and various other business organizations, including transactions, contracts and negotiations in the sports and entertainment fields. Mr. Smith represents several current and former professional athletes, authors, artists, media personalities, coaches, on-air personalities, actors, musicians and entertainers. In doing so, he also works with clients to develop strategy for raising capital and all aspects of their ongoing business operations. At the core of Mr. Smith's practice is the constant effort to help promote and enhance his client's image in order to provide them with as many business opportunities as possible.
Mr. Smith co-founded the firm in January of 2012. Previously, he spent 3 years heading up the Real Estate and Business Transactions practices for Barrett & Smith PLLC, and spent 5 years working with Drenner & Golden Stuart Wolff and Drenner Stuart Wolff LLP Metcalfe von Kreisler, LLP. Prior to and while attending law school, Mr. Smith served as the Committee Clerk for the Texas Senate Health Committee, a Legislative Aide to a Texas State Representative, and clerked for the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Texas.
Mr. Smith obtained a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts (Plan II Honors Program) in 1996 and a J.D. in 2002 from The University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the Real Estate Council of Austin (serving on the Leadership Development Council in 2005) and the Real Estate Section of the Austin Bar Association. While at UT for his Plan II Honors Thesis, he authored "The Business and Academic Aspects of The University of Texas in the Big 12 Conference" and after college served as an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Currently, Mr. Smith serves as Legal Counsel and on the Board of The Robinson Network (founded by former NBA superstar Clifford Robinson and his wife Heather Robinson which brings together professional athletes and celebrities to help serve worldwide charities and causes. Mr. Smith also currently serves on the advisory board for Music For the City, an Austin-Based non-profit, assisting Austin musicians and artists in giving back to the community.
Professionally, Mr. Smith serves on the Austin Development Board of Crockett National Bank.
When not in the office, Mr. Smith can usually be found on the golf course or at a UT sporting event.
